The present-day municipality of Selfkant was created in 1969 through the merger of Havert, Hillensberg, Höngen, Millen, Saeffelen, Süsterseel, Tüddern and Wehr; the name derives from the landscape around the Saeffel. Selfkant’s historical identity also includes the period during which the border with the Netherlands was established in 1815 and remained in place until 1949.
