Monschau's historic townscape includes half-timbered houses, romantic lanes, and medieval walls. The town is located near the Belgian border and in the German Eifel region. It was first mentioned in 1198 under the name Mons Iocizum; until 1918, it was known as Montjoie. Monschau Castle dates from the 13th century.
