History

Hanshagen was first mentioned in a document in 1248 under the name Johanneshaghen.

In 1524, Hanshagen received permission to build a watermill.

Historically, Hanshagen comprised a church village, the Hanshagen estate located separately on the main road, and Fliederberg.

As a historic settlement, Hanshagen is connected with the former monasteries of Eldena and Krummin as well as the University of Greifswald.

In 1865, Hanshagen had a church, two schools, factory-like buildings associated with the mill, and utility buildings.
