A Diverse Moorland Habitat
The nature reserve covers 269 hectares. It protects an originally mesotrophic valley-moor pool, together with adjacent groundwater-fed fen areas. It also includes an inland salt site, very rare in Western Pomerania, and a calcareous fen. This combination gives the area its distinctive character: a variety of moorland and wetland habitats take centre stage alongside the lake. Those interested in regional landscapes will find more here than just a single view of the water.
The formation of the terrain also shapes the appearance of Großer Koblentzer See. The lake lies in a low-gradient side valley of the Randow lowlands, shaped by meltwater. The valley became waterlogged during the Holocene; today it forms a groundwater-fed fen, crossed by individual mineral-soil ridges. This sequence—from a meltwater valley to a moor—gives the natural area a clear geological story. You can therefore focus your stay either on observing wildlife or on the landscape itself.
Watch Waterbirds in Autumn
Großer Koblentzer See is a waterbird breeding, migration and resting area of regional importance. Two observation hides on the southeastern shore offer particularly good views in autumn of geese and cranes flying in to roost in the evening. The Mausoleum of the Knights of Eickstedt
The mausoleum was built in 1853–1854 by Friedrich Hitzig, a pupil of Schinkel, in the late Classical style as a burial place for the Knights of Eickstedt. The present-day Koblentz church building was originally built as the family mausoleum. From around 1897 until 2013, the mausoleum was used as a village church. This change of purpose makes the building a cultural and historical point of interest in its own right, alongside the natural landscape.
