History and Culture

From 1936 to 1945, the Peenemünde experimental facilities were an important military research centre. Novel weapons, including an early cruise missile and a large rocket, were developed and produced there; forced labour was used in the process.

In the immediate surroundings of Peenemünde are the Peenemünde power station, Peenemünde Test Stand VII, Dänholm and Kleiner Wotig. The Peenemünde oxygen plant is located in the immediate surroundings of Peenemünde, amid the ruins.

Nature and Coast

The Peenemünde Hook encompasses salt marshes, brackish-water reed beds, boggy dune valleys and beach ridges covered with oak and beech trees. Rare and protected plant species can be found there.

The Peenemünde Hook is a coastal area where monument preservation and nature conservation are combined. Its remarkable birdlife includes white-tailed eagles, cormorants, coots, lapwings and dunlins.

Peenemünde is a municipality in the northern part of the island of Usedom, in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
