Löcknitz between Lake and Castle

At Lake Löcknitz and the castle, Löcknitz reveals two sides: a place for water activities and trails through the countryside, as well as a place with a history whose traces date back to the 12th century. Lake, bathing area and trails

Lake Löcknitz covers 56.5 hectares. A hiking trail runs around the lake, which is approximately 56.5 hectares in size. You can reach the natural monument “1,000-year-old Oak” on Rötberg via a path along the north shore of the lake. This gives you two different ways to spend time outdoors: a walk around the water and a trail to a distinctive tree.

Boats and pedal boats can be rented at the bathing area on Lake Löcknitz. There are also jetties and a diving platform; a lifeguard is on duty at the bathing area during the season from May to September. The outdoor swimming pool by the lake also has a playground for all generations. If you are travelling with people of different ages, you can include time in the water and the playground as separate interests in your day’s plans.

The castle and historical traces

Traces of the old Löcknitz Castle date back to the 12th century. The reconstructed and restored castle tower is once again open to visitors. Built of brick, it has a viewing platform offering views over Löcknitz and the Randow Valley. The ascent is via a staircase built into the walls, which are several metres thick.

There are six cellar rooms beneath the castle keep. Regular events and new projects take place in the castle courtyard and its buildings, including markets, an open-air concert and the medieval castle festival. These offer different ways to discover the castle: its architectural remains, the view from the tower and events in the courtyard and its buildings.

The Gorkow blacksmith’s workshop is in Gorkow, a district of Löcknitz. It was built in 1865 and extensively restored in 1999. The Löcknitz–Dorothenwalde–Rothenklempenow cycle route passes directly by the workshop. Barbecues can be held there over an open fire. The landscape around the lake also tells of times gone by: south of the hiking trail around Lake Löcknitz, a path leads to a castle rampart built by the Slavs between the 5th and 12th centuries.

Löcknitz is connected by rail via the Hamburg–Rostock–Stettin line. Road connections include the A 11 between Berlin and Stettin, the A 20 between Lübeck and Stettin, and the B 104, one of the main routes to and from Poland.
