Experience the Baltic Sea at the pier

The diving gondola at Sellin Pier offers a glimpse into the Baltic Sea habitat and its flora and fauna. What you can observe depends on visibility and the time of year. The gondola also shows a 3D underwater film about the Baltic Sea. This brings together observing nature and learning about underwater life through film. When planning your outing, you can consider whether you are mainly interested in the flora and fauna visible at the time or would like to experience the Baltic Sea through the film as well.

Wilhelmstraße and the steep coast

Wilhelmstraße, lined with magnificent buildings dating from the early days of resort architecture, leads to the 30-metre-high steep coast. This brings together views of historic architecture and a specific destination at the end of the street. From there, you can reach Sellin Pier or the promenade at South Beach via the steep “Himmelsleiter” staircase or by lift. These two options differ mainly in the access described: a steep staircase or the lift. If you want to explore Sellin’s architecture, you can focus on the buildings along Wilhelmstraße and include the route to the steep coast.

Maritime history and amber

Since 2010, the Seefahrerhaus Museum has been housed in a thatched half-timbered house on Lake Sellin. It offers a vivid impression of the working and living conditions of fishermen and seafarers in times gone by. Numerous exhibits of maritime folk culture and nautical instruments are displayed across 120 square metres. This gives the museum visit a clear focus: it explores life and work on the coast, as well as objects associated with maritime folk culture and navigation.

The Amber Museum Sellin explores a different subject. It is located in the centre of Sellin and is considered the only amber museum on the island of Rügen. If you are interested in seafaring and maritime ways of life, the Seefahrerhaus offers a fitting thematic focus; the Amber Museum complements these cultural interests with amber. The two museums therefore offer different points of interest without covering the same subject.

Around Lake Sellin

A hike around Lake Sellin runs southwest of the seaside resort of Sellin through the Neuensiener and Selliner See nature reserve. There you can observe a rich variety of flora and fauna. A tour of around 10 kilometres around Lake Sellin can begin at the Bollwerk in Sellin. The approximate distance gives you a specific point of reference when adding the walk to your day’s plans. Alongside the museums and the pier, this offers a nature-focused option, with the lake and nature reserve as its defining features.
