The dune heath on Hiddensee covers 120 hectares between Vitte and Neuendorf. It is one of the last large coastal dune heaths on the German Baltic coast and is part of the European protected area “Western Rügen Bodden Landscape with Hiddensee” (EU code DE 1544-302). Numerous small sandy paths cross the landscape. This makes the heath a clear natural highlight for visitors who want to spend time on Hiddensee walking through a distinctive coastal landscape. The two place names, Vitte and Neuendorf, also mark the extent of the heath and help situate this landscape on the island.
Hiking and Experiencing the Coast

Arriving by Water
Hiddensee can only be reached by water. Reederei Hiddensee connects the island with Schaprode on Rügen and directly with Stralsund. The water crossing is therefore part of your travel planning from the outset. Private car traffic is not permitted on Hiddensee. There are two large car parks for visitors in Schaprode: one is at the entrance to the town and offers a shuttle service, while the other is right by the harbour. If you drive to Schaprode, you can choose between these two parking options as you plan your arrival. Private car traffic is not permitted on the island itself; the connections and car parks described here relate to arriving by water.
Exhibitions and Island History
In Kloster, the Gerhart Hauptmann House has a permanent exhibition about the poet’s life and work and his connection to Hiddensee. It also includes works created on the island and current theatre productions of Hauptmann’s plays. The island connection is presented alongside the literary work and its performance history. In Vitte, the “De Lütt Küst” nature trail runs right next to Hiddensee National Park House. The island is therefore home both to a named nature trail and to a cultural highlight in Kloster. Hiddensee Island Church offers another glimpse into the past: monks from the Cistercian monastery built it in the early 14th century, and it was consecrated in 1332.
