Lakeshore, reeds and the course of the Tiene

Wedendorfer See covers approximately 24 hectares and is part of the “Köchelsdorfer Mühle including Wedendorfer See” nature conservation area. Its shore is natural, and the almost continuous belt of reeds defines the lake’s character. If you are interested in the landscape around the water, you will find another natural feature here alongside the lake itself: the Tiene, the lake’s outflow, rises on the western shore of Wedendorfer See.

North of the state road, the Tiene meanders gently through a narrow erosion valley with a pronounced steep slope. Gallery forests of alder and ash trees line the stream as far as the former Köchelstorfer Mill’s impounded millpond. The lakeshore, stream and valley represent different landscape features: reeds by the lake, the undulating terrain of the erosion valley along the Tiene, and the gallery of alder and ash trees. Hiking, walking and cycling

Wedendorfer See can be circled on a hiking trail funded by LEADER. The nature conservation area is also well served by hiking and walking trails. These offer different ways to get around: a loop around the lake, or walks and hikes in the protected area. No single trail length is specified, so when planning your day, the main thing to consider is which type of route you would like to prioritize.

You can also explore the landscape by bike. The route follows quiet, out-of-the-way paths through historic agricultural land and the present-day Köchelsdorfer Mühle nature conservation area, reaching as far as Wedendorfer See. Hiking and cycling are therefore two separate ways to experience the area; the cycling route is described as going as far as the lake, not as circling it. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by thinking about the pace you want for your vacation: the lake loop and walking trails suit a hiking-focused stay, while the cycling route offers a day on quiet paths through agricultural land and the protected area.

Castle history and the village church

Wedendorf Castle was built as a Baroque castle in 1697 and remodeled in the Neoclassical style in the early 19th century. Along the hiking trail to Wedendorf Castle, the belt of deciduous woodland features attractive old trees, especially beeches and oaks. The place’s history brings together architectural heritage and a distinctive feature of the woodland: the castle’s development across two architectural styles and the old deciduous trees along the path.

The village church in Kirch Grambow offers another historical detail. Its organ was built in 1864 by Friedrich Friese (Friese III). Beneath the church is a crypt containing the coffins of the von Bülow and von Plessen patronage families. The organ and crypt provide different points of historical interest. Together with the architectural history of Wedendorf Castle, they complement the nature and walking themes with examples of regional history.
