Königsfeld combines a hilly landscape with moors, river meadows and impressive traces of the past. Anyone looking for a mixture of nature, historic sites and distinctive village stories for their holiday will find several starting points here for planning their trip. It is therefore worth taking your preferred focus into account when looking for a holiday apartment: Should the trip centre mainly on landscapes and paths, cultural monuments or unusual regional experiences?

Hilly landscape between the Maurine and Radegast

The municipality of Königsfeld extends across hilly terrain between the river meadows of the Maurine to the west and the Radegast. The district of Woitendorf lies in the southwest of the municipality. Together with the Woitendorf Moor, it belongs to the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. The 42-hectare Demern Moor is also a defining natural area; it lies in the northeast of the Schaalsee UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The Woitendorfer Bach is another feature of the landscape. Its source area is located in the Woitendorf Forest near Demern. From there, the stream flows through the surrounding farmland for about 5 km and empties into Lake Goldensee near Groß Thurow. This sequence of forest, stream, moor and open areas offers you various thematic starting points for planning your days.

Demern village church and traces from many centuries

Demern is home to a village church with a Gothic carved altar created around 1400, which forms the centrepiece of the church. The Early Gothic choir probably dates back to around 1267. This gives Demern a special cultural appeal for travellers who appreciate historic ecclesiastical architecture and fine craftsmanship. The Klosterdreieck route includes Demern as one of its villages and runs along the Nuns’ Way, the Bishops’ Way and medieval pilgrimage routes associated with Abbot Ernestus.

You will also encounter evidence of earlier times outside the church. Bülow was the ancestral seat of the von Bülow family, which was among the principal benefactors of Rehna Nunnery in the Middle Ages. There are also archaeological sites in the south of the municipality, including a 5,500-year-old megalithic tomb and a burial mound dating back approximately 4,000 years. The regionally well-known Königsgrab burial mound is designated as an archaeological monument and lies directly on the field known as “Königsfeld”.

Special experiences for planning your trip

Kastanienhof adds a botanical dimension to the attractions on offer. The display garden is laid out in the style of a traditional cottage garden. A free guided tour via the Guidemate app provides insights into the history of Kastanienhof. This allows you to include a visit in your plans independently while combining garden culture with regional history.

Groß Rünz represents an unusual village tradition: an annual wheelbarrow race takes place through the village pond there. This event creates a lively contrast to the quieter landscapes and archaeological sites. If you are travelling with your family, such varied impressions can help you plan diverse holiday days without committing to just one type of excursion.

Choose the right accommodation for your interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Königsfeld, you can first decide which themes should shape your trip. Someone interested in moorland landscapes, streams and the Klosterdreieck route will plan differently from someone who primarily wants to get to know Demern village church, archaeological sites and Kastanienhof. The annual wheelbarrow race can also be a reason to choose your travel dates specifically. Therefore, consider which experiences you would like to combine and choose your accommodation to suit your personal holiday theme.
