St. Thomas Church and its special features

St. Thomas Church in Tribsees is known for its mill altar. No other church has a carved altar featuring the mill motif. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1245.

Other historic works of art include seven carved reliefs from 1547. They come from a pulpit in St. James’ Church in Lübeck and are now in St. Thomas Church. An epitaph depicts the Last Judgment, is surrounded by 25 coats of arms, and is dedicated to Christian von Küssow, who died in 1577.

The church is also connected with music history: the new organ, built by Karl August Buchholz of Berlin, was first played at Christmas in 1831. Another historic feature is a bell cast in 1485. It comes from the former St. Jürgen Chapel and is now in St. Thomas Church. The altar, reliefs, epitaph, organ and bell each represent a separate chapter in the history of the town.

Via Baltica and the Potato Museum
