Town gates, church and local history museum
St. Mary’s Church in Grimmen was built from around 1275 onwards. Its oldest section is an Early Gothic hall church with five bays. The church is one of the town’s impressive sights and also offers a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in Brick Gothic architecture. In Grimmen, visitors can explore the “Routes of Brick Gothic”. The town hall and the three town gates are also impressive sights.
The Grimmen Local History Museum is a particularly vivid place to discover the town’s history: it is housed in the Mühlentor, also known as the Tribsees Gate. The gate is one of the three surviving town gates of Grimmen’s medieval town fortifications, dating from 1325. The museum’s collection includes household items from the 19th and 20th centuries; its craft collection also features agricultural equipment. The museum visit therefore focuses on a range of objects from everyday life and work.
The Grimmen water tower serves as the town’s information centre and is also used as an exhibition space and registry office. With its glass observation room, the tower is also a viewing point. The viewing platform is reached by climbing 116 steps; from the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of the historic old town and surrounding countryside. If you would like to take in the view, you can make the climb part of your visit. The tower thus combines an information centre, exhibition space and viewpoint in one building.
Culture, art and the animal park
Grimmen’s “Treffpunkt Europas” cultural centre hosts more than 100 events each year. These include concerts, shows, dance and gala events, as well as comedies and readings. The programme spans everything from music and stage entertainment to dance and literature. Public art reveals another side of Grimmen: the town has nearly 20 artworks made of bronze, wood and ceramics. The different materials provide a variety of design accents.
