Cranes and protected landscapes
The Günzer Seewiesen are a European Special Protection Area for birds and a National Natural Heritage site. Kranichschutz Deutschland is developing the area in a way that is compatible with nature conservation. The KRANORAMA is a barrier-free crane-watching station on Lake Günz, with an unobstructed view of this landscape. Here, the focus is on watching wildlife: a fitting choice for travellers who want to experience nature not just as a backdrop, but as a specific destination to explore.
During the crane resting season, up to 4,000 cranes can sometimes be seen at once from the KRANORAMA, from morning until evening. Thousands of geese and ducks, as well as numerous white-tailed eagles, can also be seen. For your travel planning, the seasonal focus is therefore particularly important: crane watching suits a stay centred on the migration stopover period.
KRANICHWELTEN: explore and linger outdoors
The NABU KRANICHWELTEN visitor centre complements the observation station with a 20,000 m² outdoor area. It features walk-through insect and wetland landscapes, as well as places to sit and linger. This offers different ways to explore nature and its habitats, rather than focusing the visit solely on birdwatching. For families who want to discover nature together, the insect and wetland landscapes offer a distinct point of interest; the seating areas are also part of the outdoor space described here.
KRANICHWELTEN is also the starting point for numerous excursions and other events, including the annual “Week of the Crane”, held in September. If you are interested in this special programme, you can take September into account when planning your holiday.
Getting here and planning your stay
Bus route 305 runs from Stralsund and Barth to Günz. From the bus stop, it is about 500 m on foot to KRANICHWELTEN. This means you can also combine your visit with a bus journey. Remember to allow for the final walk of about 500 m; no walking time is specified.
From Barth, a cycling route leads to KRANICHWELTEN via the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, Nisdorf and Günz. It is about 18 km long and can be cycled all the way. This specific route information may help you choose between travelling by bus or bicycle, without making any claims about the journey time or difficulty. At the KRANORAMA, the path from the car park features information boards and places to sit; visitors make their way to the observation station in stages.
A touch of history in Altenpleen
Altenpleen Manor House is also part of the village’s history. The listed building was constructed in the second half of the 19th century on a former manor estate. This historical perspective differs from the nature experiences around KRANICHWELTEN and the KRANORAMA.
