Ahrenshoop
Accommodation in Ahrenshoop
Ahrenshoop lies between the Baltic Sea and the Bodden and offers a variety of experiences: on the beach by the village, fine sand and clear, clean water meet the coastal landscape; at the same time, the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park begins right at the village’s northern boundary. The Ahrenshooper Holz nature reserve lies to the northeast. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by asking yourself which experiences you want to shape your holiday: art and local history, trails through nature or time by the water.
Discover art and local history
The permanent exhibition at the Ahrenshoop Art Museum traces the village’s development since its beginnings around 1889: from fishing village to artists’ colony to artists’ village. It offers insight into how Ahrenshoop’s identity changed over the course of this history. Public exhibition venues in Ahrenshoop, including the art museum, are fully accessible.
Another exhibition venue with a long tradition is the Kunstkaten Ahrenshoop, which opened in 1909 and is considered the village’s longest-established exhibition venue. In addition to exhibitions, readings, talks and concerts are held there. The Schifferkirche is also a notable cultural landmark: this modern church on the Fischland/Darß peninsula was consecrated in 1951 and is one of the region’s newest churches.
If you would like to explore galleries, ceramics workshops, art venues and event spaces, consider attending the Ahrenshoop Art Night. This cultural event takes place every year on the third Saturday in August; on that evening, participating venues open their doors. The date gives art lovers a specific reason to plan their travel dates accordingly.
On foot, by bike or on the water
The Ahrenshoop Art Trail is a circular route that leads to ten works of art. It is free of charge and open to everyone at all times; the information boards and audio guide are also free. Allow about 3.5 hours for the full circular route with its ten stops. This makes it possible to combine a walk with art in public spaces, while the art museum and Kunstkaten provide additional, separate destinations for culture lovers.
The national park’s network of trails is also accessible from Ahrenshoop on foot or by bicycle. By bike, you can reach artists’ villages, quiet Bodden shores, the Darß Forest, the wild West Beach and many destinations in the national park. This selection covers a range of landscapes and interests, making Ahrenshoop appealing to travellers who like to spend their holidays being active and exploring the outdoors.
For a change of perspective on the water, you can go stand-up paddleboarding on the Baltic Sea. No previous experience is required, and you can go at your own pace. Sailing trips on the restored Zeesboot boats “Sannert” and “Blondine” are also available from Ahrenshoop harbour. These boats were once working boats used by fishermen to catch fish in the shallow Bodden waters; their present-day form as restored Zeesboot boats thus preserves a connection to the region’s fishing history.
Views and travel interests to suit you
Two viewing platforms offer different views: from Grenzweg, you can see the dunes, beach and Baltic Sea. The platform on the path to Hohes Ufer looks out over the stretch of steep coast between Ahrenshoop and Wustrow. When choosing a holiday apartment, anyone whose main interests are art and local history will plan differently from someone who particularly wants to explore national park trails, Bodden shores or the coastal landscape. These interests can help determine whether Ahrenshoop is the right holiday destination, without requiring any one experience to define the entire stay.
