Lübtheen can be explored through very different experiences: Lübtheen Heath is known for its open inland shifting dunes and extensive heathland, while the Old Sexton’s House Museum focuses on Lübtheen’s mining history and vehicle manufacturing. There is also a circular trail through heathland, silver grass and pines, as well as the Probst Jesar Forest Lido, which offers boat hire. Heathland with special protected status
Lübtheen Heath covers 1,400 hectares of open inland shifting dunes and extensive heathland. Since 2015, it has been part of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Those interested in open landscapes and heathland will find a distinctive natural environment here, quite different from an outing focused on local history or boating. The area given refers to the heath as a whole, not to the length of any one walk.
Exploring the Heathland Trail
The Heathland Trail is a circular route about 8 km long. It starts at the Probst Jesar Forest Lido car park in Lübtheen. The route passes through open heathland with silver grass and pine trees. Late summer is especially recommended, when the heather is in full bloom. The approximate route length makes it easy to plan the walk as one part of a day out; a covered seating area along the way provides a place to take a break. An information board on the Heathland Trail helps with orientation and adds information about the route to the nature experience.
The Lübtheen National Natural Heritage site is the former Lübtheen military training area. Since 1 April 2021, some paths there have been open to pedestrians and cyclists. This information applies to some paths within the area. If you would like to explore the heath on foot or by bike, you can consider this option as a separate part of your trip planning alongside the Heathland Trail.
Probst Jesar Forest Lido and boat hire
The Probst Jesar Forest Lido is on the eastern shore of a lake in Probst Jesar, east of Lübtheen and south of Hagenow. Rowing boats and pedal boats are available for hire there. This offers a different focus alongside walking: instead of a circuit through heathland, you can plan an outing on the lake by boat. Probst Jesar’s location also provides a clear point of reference within the region: the forest lido is east of Lübtheen and south of Hagenow.
Lübtheen’s history at the Old Sexton’s House
Since 29 June 2003, the Old Sexton’s House Museum has been located in the former sexton’s house on Schulstraße in Lübtheen. Its exhibitions show the history of mining and the history of vehicle manufacturing in Lübtheen. These two subjects offer different ways to explore local history: one focuses on mining, the other on vehicle manufacturing in the town.
