The Elbe landscape and special perspectives
In Dömitz, the Elbe is more than just part of the landscape: from the “Drache” bastion of the fortress, you can look across the river towards the Dömitz Elbe Bridge and the listed industrial monument of the Dömitz railway bridge. If you are also interested in the floodplain landscape, there is a skywalk nearby. As part of the “Nature and Cultural Experience of the Dömitz Railway Bridge” project, it allows visitors to view the diversity of habitats from a new perspective. Guided ranger tours are also offered in the area around Dömitz.
Fortress, lock and local history
Dömitz Fortress is a five-sided Renaissance fortress on the Mecklenburg bank of the Elbe. In its museum, you can explore topics ranging from the history of the fortress and the town to the Elbe, as well as the history of the harbour and the bridges. Fritz Reuter is also among the exhibition themes, alongside special and art exhibitions. The former arsenal houses the exhibition “People and the Biosphere – Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” at the information centre for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe M-V.
The stone lock is another testament to the history of construction. It was built between 1568 and 1572 and is considered the oldest brick lock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Later alterations preserved its original form, including the original brick lock chamber, parts of the mitre gates, and coats of arms and inscription panels. Together with the fortress complex, harbour and old department store, it is one of Dömitz’s places of interest. Exploring by water and by bike
At kilometre 0.00 in Dömitz begins the navigable Müritz-Elde Waterway, which connects the Elbe with the Mecklenburg Lake District. From Dömitz harbour, you can take trips on the Elbe without passing through locks. The largely unspoilt Müritz-Elde Waterway has a gentle current and is also suitable for paddlers and inexperienced raft and houseboat users.
The Dömitz Water Touring Centre includes a marina, Huckleberry’s raft station, canoe hire, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboard hire. This offers a range of ways to enjoy the water: you can choose a canoe trip, a pedal-boat ride, or a raft or houseboat. If you prefer to travel by land, three cycle routes pass through or lead through Dömitz: the Elbe Cycle Route, the Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route and the international Iron Curtain Trail. The Elbetal Star Tour runs from Dömitz via the Klein Schmölen inland dune and the Klein Schmölen Brack back to Dömitz.
