Balow is located in the sparsely populated southern part of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, near the Brandenburg state border. The Tarnitz runs west of the village, while the Löcknitz runs to the east.

Balow originated as a Slavic cul-de-sac village, was first mentioned in an official document in 1341, and has been a manor village since the 13th century.
