Marnitz between the Village Church, Castle Ramparts and the Ruhner Mountains
Accommodation in Marnitz
Marnitz combines impressive evidence of the town’s history with varied landscapes in the immediate and wider surroundings. Anyone wishing to plan a trip around cultural discoveries, viewpoints and historic paths will find various starting points here for planning their own day trips.
Church and Castle as Defining Testimonies to History
The village church in Marnitz has a particularly distinctive architectural structure: An 18th-century half-timbered church and a Neo-Gothic tower built in 1913 are connected by a wooden passageway. The interior contains a Baroque altar and a Renaissance pulpit. During the phased restoration of Marnitz Church, a sacred building from the 18th century, a winter church and toilets were also incorporated.
The castle of Marnitz also tells of a long past. Its construction began during the last Slavic period in the 10th or 11th century. The main rampart rises 8 m above the lowland terrain, and the entire castle complex has been protected as a historic monument since 1930. Marnitz therefore offers a historical focal point that differs from the architectural history of the village church and adds its own distinctive element to travel planning.
The region’s history also includes a former Slavic castle complex south of Marnitz in the Ruhner Forest. In the immediate surroundings, hikers can walk through the Marnitz beech groves and clearly see the contours of the old castle moat and the ramparts of the Slavic castle in the landscape. The Marnitz weather station was founded in 1864 by the teacher C. H. Tarnke, who lived in Marnitz at the time, and is one of the oldest weather stations in Mecklenburg.
Ruhner Mountains, Viewpoints and Paths through the Landscape
The Ruhner Mountains, a protected landscape area, lie south of Marnitz in the immediate surroundings. The Ruhner Berg is 176 m high and the second-highest elevation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The immediate surroundings of the Ruhner Mountains offer a nature trail as well as signposted cycling and hiking paths. Depending on your interests for the day, you can therefore focus on a viewpoint, an educational trail or a longer tour.
Another excursion in the immediate surroundings leads to the Ruhner Tower. The viewing platform is located at a height of 32.5 m and can be reached via 180 steps. From there, the view extends across Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. The precise number of steps is just as relevant to personal day-trip planning as the question of whether your trip should focus more on views, nature observation or historic traces.
In the wider regional area northeast of Marnitz lies the Mooster, an extensive flat heath and moorland landscape. It is considered part of a reservoir basin formed at the end of the Ice Age; the Sabelsee and Treptowsee are among its remains. Marnitz is also the starting point for a well-developed route to burial mounds in the Mooster and its surroundings. On the road from Marnitz to Mooster, 400 m beyond the Siggelkow-Suckow intersection, two fenced burial mounds stand in a small wooded area. The so-called „Small Ring Rampart“ is a well-preserved archaeological monument that is more than 1,100 years old.
Choose the Right Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests
When looking for accommodation in Marnitz, you can make the desired focus of your trip the starting point. Anyone wishing to combine churches, castle complexes and historic traces can plan their days around the town’s cultural monuments and the early historical sites. For nature-oriented activities, the Ruhner Mountains, the nature trail, the signposted cycling and hiking paths, and the landscapes around the Mooster offer a range of different themes.
A holiday apartment or holiday home in Marnitz can therefore be selected primarily according to the planned mix of excursions: views from the Ruhner Tower, paths through the Marnitz beech groves, landscape observation in the Mooster or historical discoveries at the church and castle.
