Lohmen: Village Church, Lakes and Village Life

Medieval wall paintings, a village museum and a recreational forest give Lohmen its varied character. There are also lakes that invite you to swim in summer, as well as events that bring together the village square and festival barn. Church, Wall Paintings and Village History

Lohmen Village Church is a medieval fieldstone building: it consists of two bays and a narrower, single-bay choir, built at the end of the 13th century. A north sacristy and a narrower tower were added later. The medieval wall paintings are particularly striking. Their imagery and execution are considered unique in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and of great art-historical importance. The interior, painted throughout, continues to attract visitors today.

The village museum also has its own focus. The granary became a museum in 2006; the Lohmen Village Museum presents the history of the region in the 20th century. In Lohmen, medieval art and more recent regional history therefore stand side by side as distinct cultural themes.

Another perspective reaches far back in time: the area of today’s municipality of Lohmen had already been inhabited at least 5,000 years ago. Megalithic tombs and burial mounds in the surrounding area point to this. Near the village is a larger burial ground with at least ten Bronze Age burial mounds. The Sternberger Seenland Nature Park also lists archaeological hiking trails in Lohmen and Kritzow among its attractions. Forest, Water and Activities

The “Seeblick” recreational forest in Lohmen is intended for play, learning, exercise and experiencing nature. Around 3.3 hectares of municipal woodland are legally designated as recreational forest. The Children’s Health Forest adds another nature-related attraction: it opened on 25 April 2025 and is a pilot project promoting health, nature-based education and environmental protection.

There is clear seasonal guidance for spending time by the water: Lohmen’s lakes invite you to swim in summer. Hiking and fishing are also among the village’s nature-based recreational activities. Village Festivals and Getting Your Bearings Locally

The village festival takes place every year. The village square and festival barn also come together for the Mecklenburg Sheep-Shearing Festival and the traditional European Christmas Market. These events provide different occasions for village life and socializing; only the village festival is stated to take place annually.

The Lohmen Tourist Information Office is located in the festival barn in the village centre and offers visitors tips for their stay in the region.
