Verchen on Lake Kummerow

Verchen brings together Lake Kummerow, the Peene River, a fine sandy beach and a remarkable monastery church. The village lies on the lake’s northeastern shore, where the Peene flows out, and within the “Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow” protected landscape area. St. Mary’s Monastery Church and Medieval Art

St. Mary’s Monastery Church was built in 1269 as an Early Gothic hall church. That same year, Benedictine nuns moved to Verchen and expanded the church into a monastery. Three stained-glass windows have been preserved in the church; they are among the oldest stained glass in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There is also a triumphal cross dating from around 1440. Visitors interested in architectural history and sacred art will find several tangible examples from different centuries in one place.

Beach on Lake Kummerow

The beach in Verchen has fine sand and an extensive shallow-water area. Facilities include a volleyball court, a fitness trail and a playground with a large pirate ship. A dog beach borders the swimming beach, with a buffer zone separating the two areas. When planning your day, you can choose whether to spend time at the swimming beach, get active or enjoy the beach with your dog. A beach kiosk sells food and drinks.

Trails and Views in the Surrounding Area

The Seeberge Nature Trail is an educational trail between Gravelotte and Verchen. It runs through the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow Nature Park and along the steep eastern shore of Lake Kummerow. The route connects Verchen with Gravelotte and passes through a scenic part of the nature park.

There is an observation tower near Verchen, in the Verchener Seeberge hills. Stairs lead to the viewing platform, which offers expansive views across Lake Kummerow and the surrounding landscape. From the Nature Park Information Centre, a short trip also takes you to a fen considered the largest in Central Europe.
