Views and activities in the forest
The observation tower in the monastery and castle complex can be reached by climbing a spiral staircase with more than 92 steps. Its viewing platform is 25 m high and offers views over Dargun, Klostersee lake and the monastery and castle complex. The climb and the platform’s height make this viewpoint a memorable stop for anyone who would like to see Dargun from above.
In Dargun’s recreation forest, the forest adventure trail has 15 stations and two routes of different lengths: the “Überläufer-Tour” is 3 km long, and the “Frischlings-Tour” is 1.5 km. This lets you choose between the two stated routes when planning your day. The historic “Slavic hillfort” adventure trail focuses on a different subject: information boards explain how Slavs lived and worked more than 1,000 years ago.
Monastery complex, museum and history
The monastery and castle complex is a venue for numerous events each year, including the Dargun Music Summer. Concerts and church services are also held at St. Mary’s Monastery Church. If you are interested in the history of the former monastery, you can visit its impressive walls on a guided tour of the grounds. Since 1990, the complex has been secured, renovated, put to use and opened to visitors.
“Uns lütt Museum” is a local history museum where visitors can handle and try things out. It is housed in the monastery’s former guesthouse and covers 760 m². The collection is displayed in 15 rooms and in the open-air area. This gives the museum a distinctive role alongside the historic walls and events at the monastery and castle complex: the focus here is on discovering local history in the exhibition rooms and outdoors in the open-air area.
Another testament to architectural and technological history is the Dargun watermill. It is a technical monument, built in the 13th century by Cistercian monks as a watermill. Together with the monastery complex and the historic adventure trail, it gives visitors several different ways to explore history: through a monument, preserved walls, a museum collection and information boards.
Klostersee lake, nature parks and special activities
The lakeside promenade at Dargun’s Klostersee invites you to take a walk; swimming, fishing and boating are also available. Dargun is the gateway to the “Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow” and “Peene Valley River Landscape” nature parks. If you enjoy combining your holiday with time in nature, you’ll find both a connection to the lake and two named nature parks here.
The Poseidon boating school in Dargun offers another activity involving the water. It provides training for boat licences for inland waters, as well as for the sea and coast, including radio operation. At Waldeck, the maze offers something completely different: this special attraction is described as an experience for the whole family, covers 8,500 m² and consists of hornbeam hedges taller than a person.
