Culture

Lichtenhagen Village Church was first mentioned in 1319 and is a church built largely from unworked fieldstones, dating from the transition between the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Its rectangular choir from the 13th century is the oldest part and contains 14th-century vault paintings.

The church has a 42-metre-high western tower with a distinctive roof shaped like a “bishop's mitre”. Comprehensive restoration began in 1892 and was continued from 1998 in several phases with the support of a heritage preservation association.

Nature

Elmenhorst/Lichtenhagen lies between the lower Warnow and Bad Doberan, near the Baltic Sea coast. The municipality includes a nearly one-kilometre-long nature conservation area directly at the Stoltera cliffs.

The Erratic Boulder Garden in Lichtenhagen opened in September 2008 and comprises five areas in the village centre. It uses stones from the municipality, some of which are arranged as constellations, and is complemented by old fruit varieties and other planted green spaces.
