Art and Castle History
In the city centre, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg presents changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. A visit offers insight into a range of artistic perspectives rather than focusing on a single permanent exhibition. The AutoMuseum offers another perspective on art and design: its exhibits include a classic T1 bus, the television star “Herby” and elaborately designed special bodies. Visitors interested in vehicles can also discover unusual forms of body design there.
Wolfsburg Castle was founded 700 years ago and is one of the best-known architectural monuments of the North German Renaissance. The city museum at M2K offers guided tours of the Garden Hall, the Courtroom and the Hunting Hall. Tours of the former Baroque garden and the English landscape garden of Wolfsburg Castle are also available. This makes it possible to explore the castle’s history not only through its rooms but also through its two differently named garden areas. At the castle museum in Neuhaus Castle, original objects and models tell the story of the site’s medieval foundation, the lives of the knights and the development of the former Neuhaus district. Public guided tours, rallies and special events there focus on the construction and origins of the Wolfsburg monument.
Explore Technology and Get Active
With more than 300 phenomena to explore, the phaeno Science Center invites visitors to discover science and technology. The exhibition experience is housed in a striking architectural sculpture designed by star architect Zaha Hadid. For families, this can be a different kind of outing from visiting a museum of art or historic rooms: here, scientific and technological phenomena take centre stage.
If you want to spend time by the water, you can swim, sail or go stand-up paddleboarding at Allersee. The public Allerpark Wolfsburg leisure park covers 130 hectares and offers walks by the lake, a high ropes course and a sandy beach. For an active stay, there is also Wakepark Wolfsburg: its cableway is 568 metres long and runs over six masts on an artificial lake. The moderate lap length and blunt riding angles make the cableway suitable for beginners and children, too. This means there are different options to choose from—from spending time on the sandy beach to riding the Wakepark cableway.
For quieter moments, visit the approximately 26-hectare castle park surrounding Wolfsburg Castle. You can walk, relax and admire sculptures there. Allerpark can also serve as a starting point for longer walks and cycling tours in Wolfsburg.
Getting There and More Destinations
Wolfsburg is connected to the German rail network by ICE services and can be reached via the A39 and A2 motorways. You can therefore plan your journey by train or car.
