Floodplains, views and hiking trails
The Hohenrode floodplain landscape in the Rinteln district of Hohenrode covers 115 hectares. Its waters have developed into an important resting and wintering area for birds. A four-to-six-metre-high observation tower offers an unobstructed view across the lake landscape. If you are particularly interested in nature and birdlife, you will find a different focus here than on an excursion to the historic town centre.
Viewpoints in the Weser Mountains also shape the range of excursions around Rinteln. The approximately 20-metre-high Klippenturm tower stands on Luhdener Klippen, a mountain located around 300 metres above sea level; refreshments are available there. Local circular hiking trails and the Weserbergland Trail (XW) pass directly by the tower. The Jahrtausendblick offers views of the neighbouring active quarry, the Weser Valley and the North German Plain; it is 250 metres high and has 156 steps.
For walks through the districts, there are the Historic Village Walks. Their routes range from 2.4 to 11.5 kilometres and pass through all of Rinteln’s districts. Along the way, they take you to sights, historic sites and viewpoints. The different route lengths offer a practical guide when choosing a shorter or longer route for an excursion.
Experience Weser Renaissance architecture and history
On guided town tours, you can discover Weser Renaissance architecture through its characteristic details: oriel windows, gables, fan rosettes and colourful half-timbering. This architectural style dates from the period between 1520 and 1620. Rinteln also offers guided tours in historic costumes, including tours with Babette and Margaretha, who share stories from the 17th century.
The Die Eulenburg Museum is housed in a manor house dating from the 16th century. It takes visitors on a journey through 800 years of history, focusing on beliefs in witchcraft, science, university history and the history of Rinteln. At St. Nikolai Church, the historic organ dating from 1621 is the centrepiece of numerous musical events. The district of Möllenbeck is also home to one of the best-preserved late-medieval monastery complexes in Germany. These places offer different ways to explore the past—from town and university history to architecture and music.
By rail bike, bicycle and on the water
An active excursion option is the rail bike on the Extertalbahn’s 18-kilometre rail network. With a specially designed rail bike, you can travel from Rinteln to the Exter Valley. The route runs from the Weser Uplands to the Lipper Bergland and passes through two federal states. The WeserErleben route is another option for a cycling tour: it starts and ends at the Hohenrode floodplain landscape and includes an experience station on the history of the town of Rinteln.
For Weserboot Rinteln, the start and finish are at the harbour wall opposite the beach bar. A new bridge over the Old Harbour connects Gouvernementsinsel to the Weser promenade via a circular route. This gives you a range of ways to get around in Rinteln: a rail bike ride, a cycling route, a circular walk and an activity on the water.
Town life and regional impressions
The Rinteln Old Town Festival traditionally begins on the second Friday in August in the heart of the town centre and ends on Sunday. The Irish Folk Festival takes place every June in the late-medieval monastery complex in Möllenbeck. If you would like to combine your stay with one of these festivals, take the relevant time of year into account when planning your trip.
At the Rinteln weekly market, you can ask the traders where their products come from and get more information about them. This also makes the market interesting for visitors who would like to learn more about the goods on offer while shopping.
