The Deister, waterwheels and trails

An interactive forest nature trail leads from the Wennigsen “Waldkater” hiking car park to the waterwheels in the Deister and includes eight stations. If you are planning a trip to the waterwheels, there is also a footpath of about 3 kilometres leading directly there from the same car park. This approximate distance provides a concrete reference point for planning your day; the forest nature trail offers a different experience with its stations. Thus, a trail with learning stations and the stated direct walking route offer two distinct ways to plan a stay filled with nature experiences.

The base loop of the “Green Chain” also offers a longer perspective on Wennigsen (Deister): the circular route is about 30 kilometres long and passes through the eight villages. This is on a different scale from the footpath from Waldkater to the waterwheels. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for several days, you can take these differences into account when deciding: would you like to visit individual destinations or include a longer circular route in your trip? The route is a separate undertaking and should not be confused with the path to the waterwheels.

Natural swimming pool and water activities

Wennigsen Water Park has just under 2,000 square metres of swimming area. As a natural swimming pool, its water is cleaned without chemicals using a regeneration pond and native aquatic plants. This water-treatment method is a defining feature of the pool and sets the water park apart as an excursion destination among the nature and cultural experiences described here. If you would like to include a day of swimming in your stay, you can make the water park a separate item on your itinerary.

A public transport connection to the water park is described from Wennigsen (Deister) station: bus routes 540 and 362 run to the “Schützenhof” stop on Bröhnweg. From there, it is about 700 metres on foot. This distance refers to the walk from that stop, not to the distance from the station. This makes it possible to consider this part of the journey separately if you are planning to travel without a car.

Local history and art

The Wennigsen Local History Museum is housed in the Obere Mühle (Upper Mill). This half-timbered building with a waterwheel was built around 1700 as one of Wennigsen’s original seven watermills. The building itself therefore connects local history with the milling tradition; it offers a tangible historical reference if, alongside the trails in the Deister, you are also interested in how the town developed.

Another cultural highlight is the Wennigsen Time Monument, a precision-engineered work of art. It was created and built by Erich Pollähne, a master precision mechanic and amateur astronomer. This allows you to combine the cultural side of your stay with nature destinations, while recognising that each offers a different kind of experience.

Connections to Hanover and a distinctive tradition

The S-Bahn runs between Wennigsen (Deister) and Hanover every half hour; the journey takes 25 minutes. This connection is a useful reference point if you would like to combine a stay in the town with a visit to Hanover. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore also be important to consider whether you plan to spend most of your holiday in Wennigsen or include the city in your itinerary.

One of the area’s defining traditions is the “Historical Freischießen” festival, held every three years. It commemorates the medieval peasant and citizens’ militia. The festival includes a colourful parade with historical carriages and costumes, watched by thousands of visitors. If you are interested in regional history and public festive traditions, this is a distinctive feature of the town; however, the festival does not take place every year.
