Dötlingen: Hunte Trails, Moorland and Cultural Heritage

Dötlingen combines an artists’ village with trails through river landscapes and moorland. In the village centre, St. Firminus, a fieldstone church, the thatched Tabkenhof farmhouse and the so-called “1,000-year-old village oak” stand side by side. However, scientific studies show that the oak is not 1,000 years old. Those wishing to discover Dötlingen can therefore choose between village history, art and nature trails—and consider which focus matters most for their trip and choice of holiday apartment.

Village Centre and Architectural Heritage
The Tabkenhof is a thatched, hall-style farmhouse, particularly striking at 58 metres long: it is considered the largest hall-style farmhouse in north-west Germany. Together with the medieval fieldstone church of St. Firminus and the village oak, it forms the centre of the artists’ village. These three very different features make the village centre a destination for anyone interested in architectural heritage and historic townscapes.
The church interior also offers a distinctive glimpse into the village’s history. St. Firminus has preserved paintings dating back to the time when the church was built; much of the artwork has since been supplemented. The church is among the oldest and most notable in the region. Those interested in historic paintings can find a different way into Dötlingen’s past here than by looking at the Tabkenhof.
Trails Along the Hunte and Through the Moor
For a hike with a fixed starting point, the Huntepadd circular trail is a good option: it starts and ends at the Karkbäk car park, Karkbäk 15, 27801 Dötlingen. At Gierenberg, the trail passes a viewpoint with wide-ranging views across the Hunte valley. An optional loop of just under two kilometres leads to the Sensory and Adventure Garden. The public site is freely accessible and designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. Tactile posts, a hammock net and a humming stone are among the features inviting visitors to engage their different senses.
The Rieselwiesenpadd is a circular trail of around ten kilometres, easily reached from the centre of Dötlingen. It follows the Hunte through the Poggenpohlsmoor nature reserve and across former irrigation meadows. This cultural landscape has been made accessible to visitors again. Its length and route are therefore quite different from the optional loop on the Huntepadd. If you plan to make the Rieselwiesenpadd a key part of your trip, you can allow for it as a separate, longer hiking day.
Another nature route is the Moorpadd. It leads from the “Zur Loh” car park through the Poggenpohlsmoor nature reserve to the Oltmannberg natural monument, also known as O-Berg. With a little luck, you may spot rare plants and animals along the way, such as the moor frog. The trail thus combines a visit to the designated natural monument with the moorland; sightings of rare species are not guaranteed.
Art and Discoveries at Your Own Pace
Alongside the hiking trails, there are activities with a different focus. The crime-mystery walk “Tabea Thaler – The Ghost of Dötlingen” is 2.5 kilometres long and takes around two hours. If you would rather explore the artists’ village than follow a crime story, you can choose the KulturAktiv tour, which takes you around Dötlingen and its many galleries and cafés. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide which experiences you want to shape your trip: the village centre and its historic buildings, a walk along the Hunte, or a trail through the Poggenpohlsmoor. The trails have different starting points and lengths; the Rieselwiesenpadd can be reached from the village centre. These differences can help you weigh your interests against the location of your holiday apartment, without assuming that every outing starts from the same place.
