St. Blasius Church houses a bronze baptismal font dating from 1392, a medieval winged altarpiece, a fresco from 1519 and the tomb of Duke William the Younger. From May until the harvest festival, the church is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The historic works of art and seasonal opening hours give your visit a specific time frame.

The historic town hall is one of the most significant buildings of the Weser Renaissance. You can also encounter this period at the Welfenschloss, where two Renaissance rooms with wall paintings covering the entire walls have been preserved. The Municipal Museum in the palace displays exhibits on the town’s history and long-distance trade by land and water. Anyone interested in trade and urban development will find a different way to explore history here than by looking at the surviving architecture.

The historic rooms in the Welfenschloss can only be visited as part of a guided town tour. Visiting hours are listed as Fridays at 2:30 p.m. from May to October. This is an important detail for planning your day if you want to see these particular rooms. Another historic address is Doctor Eisenbart’s death house at Lange Straße 79: it was formerly the “Zum Wilden Mann” inn, where he died on November 11, 1727.

Old Town, Rivers and Views

A historic town walk starts at the town hall and ends after a short stroll at the Weserstein, where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet. The route links a striking old-town building with the place where the Weser begins. Public town tours and costumed tours are also offered in Hann. Münden, including tours featuring historical characters. They are aimed at individual visitors, groups, adults and children.

For views over the town, head to the Tillyschanze: the observation tower is 25 metres high and stands on the edge of the Reinhardswald forest. From there, you can see the old town of Hann. Münden and the three rivers. The Tillyschanze is about a 30-minute walk from the historic old town. If you would like to combine town views with a longer walk, you can plan this as a separate outing.

The shared landing stage for the Werra, Fulda and Weser is another useful landmark by the water. It is at the end of the Fulda, on the west bank of Unterer Tanzwerder island, immediately north of the suspension bridge. The landing stage includes a large canoe ramp; the old town is a five-minute walk away. Blümer Berg is also nearby. It is part of the Hann. Münden municipal forest and a hiking area close to the town.

Market Visits and Holiday Ideas

The weekly market is held in the historic old town, in the marketplace in front of the town hall. Stalls sell, among other things, fruit and vegetables, meat and sausages, cheese, baked goods, fish and honey, as well as other food and products. Its wide selection makes the market a destination in its own right for anyone who likes to include local shopping in their day while away.
