Mills, Castle and Town History

The International Mill Museum Gifhorn displays historic mills from various countries and brings traditional craftsmanship to life. It is not just a single building that takes centre stage here, but mill culture from different countries. The Welfenschloss offers a different historical highlight: built in the 16th century, it lies on the northern edge of the district town between Schlosssee and the River Ise. Wide moats surround the castle and contribute to its distinctive appearance.

The town’s historic buildings also reflect different uses and periods. The Old Gifhorn Town Hall was built in 1562 and served as the town hall until 1843/44. Its carved panels depict the trades of Gifhorn’s guilds, animal images, foliage, geometric decorative designs and Gothic texts; the year 1562 can also be seen there. St. Nicolai Church on the market square is a Protestant Baroque church built between 1733 and 1744.

The Kavalierhaus in Gifhorn’s old town was built in 1546. Master builder Michael Clare constructed it for the castle captain Caspar von Leipzig. The house is home to EMMA – Museum Apartment in the Kavalierhaus Gifhorn, which displays the fully furnished apartment of its last resident, Emma Wrede. The exhibition presents middle-class domestic life in the first half of the 20th century. The town hall, church and Kavalierhaus thus offer different ways to explore Gifhorn’s history: through municipal administration, Protestant Baroque architecture and domestic life.

Schlosssee and Gifhorn Heath

Gifhorn’s Schlosssee is centrally located in the town centre, between the castle and the Mill Museum. The lake has picnic and leisure areas, a large themed playground and a fitness trail. This makes Schlosssee a destination in its own right alongside the cultural attractions: the focus here is on spending time outdoors, playing and exercising.

Gifhorn Heath, to the west in the district of Winkel, offers a different kind of landscape. The nature reserve covers around 32 hectares, lies in the Upper Aller Lowlands natural region and includes a section of the ancient Aller glacial valley. As an important refuge for fauna and flora, it is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. This natural landscape is clearly distinct from the historic buildings and the centrally located Schlosssee.

You can reach Gifhorn Heath via Kellerberg road, which joins Winkeler Weg; parking is available right by the entrance. Visitors who would like to explore the landscape on a themed tour can join the two-hour hike “Hermann Löns and the Heath.” It covers topics including the heath’s formation, use and maintenance. If you prefer to get around by bike, there are numerous cycle paths and tours to choose from. They lead through Gifhorn and the surrounding region, through the town, heathland and forests, and to lakes and attractions.

The Gifhorn weekly market is part of the town’s regular rhythm, with changing regional and seasonal produce available every Wednesday and Saturday. Together with the historic attractions and the activities around Schlosssee, it offers a range of options for different interests, so a stay need not be limited to just one theme.
