Jarßum combines the distinctive landscape of the coastal marsh with traces of dike history and a nature reserve on the Lower Ems. The village is situated on a Warft, around 6.5 km from Emden. It borders the Ems to the south and Widdelswehr to the east. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Jarßum will find a place where experiencing nature, outdoor activities and rural cultural history are closely connected – without the individual impressions having to become one uniform excursion programme.

Lower Ems and Petkum Foreland of the Dike

The “Unterems” nature reserve is part of FFH Area 002, “Unterems und Außenems” (DE 2507-331), and therefore belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. An important part of this protected area is the approximately 200-hectare Petkum foreland of the dike on the Lower Ems. It extends from Jarßum to Gandersum and was designated as the “Unterems” nature reserve by ordinance of 30 May 2017, together with adjacent areas in the district of Leer.

For visitors, the varied landscape above all defines the character of the Lower Ems: salt marshes, tidal creeks and extensive river mudflats up to 250 metres wide. These areas provide a habitat for numerous highly specialised, endangered plant and animal species. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors and observing different types of landscape can consciously set aside time during their trip planning for the area around Jarßum and the foreland of the dike.

Paths Along the Dike and the Ems

Pedestrians and cyclists can travel year-round on the paths in front of or behind the dike between Gandersum and Emden’s outer harbour. In addition, the outer-dike path along the Petkum foreland of the dike is accessible from 1 July to 30 September. The path between the Emden districts of Petkum and Jarßum was previously accessible only during this period. For your planning, it is therefore useful to distinguish between the connections that are possible year-round and the seasonally accessible section along the outer dike.

This makes it possible to combine different holiday priorities: A cycle tour can focus on the dike landscape, while a walk offers views of tidal creeks, salt marshes and the Ems. The specific sections of path remain clearly distinguishable from one another. When looking for accommodation, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore the nature around Jarßum or also include the paths towards Gandersum and Emden in your days.

Church, Church Mound and Five Dike Lines

There are also notable points of interest within the village itself. Jarßum’s small single-nave church was built in 1797 on a Warf overlooking the dike. Its simple interior was extensively renovated in 1969. The Jarßum church mound is listed as an ensemble comprising the church, church mound and cemetery. The dates “before 1933” and the name Theodor Allwardt from Emden are also associated with the church.

At the Stackdeich, the development of the landscape becomes particularly vivid: five dike lines dating from the Middle Ages to the present run over, behind and alongside one another there. This site connects Jarßum’s historical character with the subject of coastal protection and complements the natural experiences along the Lower Ems with a cultural-historical perspective.

A Place for Different Kinds of Holiday Days

Jarßum also has a playground centrally located within the village. For families, it can be an additional, convenient stop between excursions, while older children and adults explore the dike paths or the landscape along the river. Jarßum therefore offers various options for planning the day: observing nature, cycling, walking and making a brief stop in the village can be combined according to individual interests.
