A roughly 2-kilometre-long moorland discovery trail with ten informative stops runs through the Diepholz Moor. It brings the moor ecosystem to life in every season.

The Moorwelten in Wagenfeld offer a different perspective on moorland and climate: this multimedia experience is dedicated to both topics. The moor railway stops right at the Moorwelten and takes visitors to the “Moorpadd” nature trail and the hiking paths in Neustädter Moor. This makes it easy to include both a visit to the exhibition and walks in the moor in your travel plans.

In the wider regional area of the Diepholz Moor Depression, countless cranes can be observed during the autumn months. Planning your trip for this time of year offers a special nature experience, distinct from the moor trail’s attractions, which can be enjoyed year-round.

Lake Dümmer and the Hunte: different ways to enjoy the water

At Lake Dümmer, leisure activities for sailors and surfers take centre stage. The lake covers 16 square kilometres and is located in Dümmer Nature Park. The final stage of the Hunte River Cycle Route also passes through Goldenstedt on its way to the nature park; there, the Hüde nature conservation station and the Dümmer Museum in Lembruch invite visitors to stop by.

The Dümmer Museum connects the lake’s nature, landscape and culture with its past, present and future. At the “Life in Water” research station, the ecology of the Dümmer ecosystem is explained in detail. The Stone Age at Lake Dümmer comes to life through original artefacts dating from 4,000 to 2,000 BC and reconstructions. The museum therefore offers a range of points of interest, from the ecosystem to the region’s early settlement history.

The Hunte also offers its own way to discover the region. In Diepholz district, it has been developed as an attractive destination for nature-based tourism and canoeing. The river is navigable by canoe for about 105 kilometres, from the Osnabrück region to Oldenburg. The Hunte River Cycle Route is a separate route: it is 137 kilometres long and runs from Elsfleth to Lake Dümmer. Those who prefer to travel by bike will also find a cycle guidance system in the district, guiding leisure cyclists along around 1,700 kilometres of routes.

Cultural history in Syke and Lembruch

The Syke District Museum, with the Gesseler Gold Hoard Forum, is the district’s museum of cultural and everyday history. It presents everyday life from the Stone Age to the threshold of the present day. Together with the insights into the Stone Age at the Dümmer Museum, it offers an engaging comparison of topics: the focus here is on life around Lake Dümmer, while the district museum traces the broader arc of everyday history across the district.
