Waldkappel is located in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse, between Hessisch Lichtenau and Eschwege.
The town lies in the East Hessian Uplands between the Hoher Meißner mountain range to the north and the Stölzinger Mountains to the south, near the confluence of the Schemmerbach and Wehre rivers.
History
Waldkappel was first mentioned in an official document in 1226, received town privileges in 1414 and developed in the late Middle Ages along the historic trade route known as “through the long Hesse”.
The late Gothic Church of St. George stands in the town centre and is a reminder of the town’s former prosperity.
Mountain Biking
A 15.6-kilometre mountain bike route leads from the Haus der Jugend youth centre “at the Großen Steinen” to the outdoor swimming pool in Waldkappel and returns via a different route.
