Culture and History

Trendelburg Castle was built on the Diemel in the 13th century, at a ford where important trade routes crossed. The settlement in front of the castle was enclosed by a town wall.

The Deisel Tunnel near Deisel is a 202-metre-long former railway tunnel of the Carlsbahn, built in 1846–1847. Together with its gatekeeper's house, it is classified as a cultural monument under Hessian monument protection law.

Cycling and hiking trails run through the tunnel. This suits a stay in which cycling or hiking plays a role.

The tall keep of Trendelburg Castle is over 40 metres high and has walls up to 7 metres thick.

Its viewing platform can be reached via more than 130 steps; from there, you can see across North Hesse and over the rooftops of Trendelburg. In clear conditions, Kassel may be visible.

The castle tower houses a torture museum, the “Angstloch” with its small opening, and a Grimm floor featuring paper-cut artworks by Albert Völkl.
