Discover Berge: Church, village green and pilgrimage route
Accommodation in Berge
A listed church in the village centre, the Berger village green and a pilgrimage route that passes through Berge offer different starting points for a stay. Architectural and church history meet a central square with market activity; at the same time, the Baltic-Central German Pilgrimage Route passes through the village. The Königsmühle adds to these themes, while Neuhausen Castle in the nearby area offers its own historical perspective. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether local history, the village green or the pilgrimage route should be the main focus of your trip.
Church and Königsmühle: architectural history in the village
The listed church and parish are located in the centre of Berge. A first church in Berge was mentioned about 455 years ago. A significant later change came in 1868: the church was completely redesigned, an apse was added and the chancel was refurbished. The church’s history therefore includes both an early mention and a clearly dated 19th-century renovation.
The church houses a restored baptismal angel from the demolished village church in Hülsebeck. The old half-timbered tower was also renovated and its roof was newly covered. The angel’s origins lead to Hülsebeck; the renovation, furnishings and tower work offer different points of reference for the history of the church in Berge.
Another listed building is the Königsmühle. It is located on Friedensstraße, which was completely rebuilt in 2014. The protected mill building and the dated reconstruction of the street can thus be seen as different aspects of the village’s development.
The village green: market and meeting place
The Berger village green is in the centre and is used, among other things, as a venue for celebrations. There is also a playground and a commercial complex with a supermarket and snack bar. The green is therefore a different focal point from the church: while architectural and church history take centre stage there, events, the playground and the commercial complex shape the picture at the green.
From March to October, a weekend market is held on the Berger village green once a month. If you are planning your trip specifically around it, check the exact date in advance.
Pilgrimage route and castle history
The Baltic-Central German Pilgrimage Route also passes through Berge. If the route is the main focus of your trip, check the current route conditions before setting off.
Nearby, in the separate village of Neuhausen about two kilometres from Berge, Neuhausen Castle stands on the remains of a medieval border castle first mentioned in 1149. The medieval history of the castle offers a different historical emphasis from the architectural and church history in Berge.
Choose a holiday apartment based on your travel interests
Berge can be the focus of your holiday-apartment search if the church, village green and the pilgrimage route passing through the village are central to your trip. If you would also like to include Neuhausen Castle, take into account when choosing a location that the castle is in a separate village.
