Nature

In the south of Oberspreewald-Lausitz lies the Lusatian Lakeland, a landscape with more than 20 artificial lakes. It was created by flooding former open-cast mines.

The district's surrounding landscape also includes the Spreewald, a floodplain landscape with numerous waterways, meadows and mixed forests that has been protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1991.

Activities

Cycling is a particularly popular visitor activity in the district: More than 580 kilometres of signposted cycling paths connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlener Berge.

Several named landmarks lie in the wider area around Oberspreewald-Lausitz, at approximate straight-line distances from the centre: St. Martin's Church in Brieske, around 7.0 kilometres to the south; Henriettenkirche in Annahütte, around 7.5 kilometres to the southwest; Fürstlich Drehna Water Castle, around 24.2 kilometres to the northwest; Weiße Berg, around 10.4 kilometres to the east; Brandberg, around 11.9 kilometres to the northwest; Tibenzberg, around 12.7 kilometres to the north; Kleine Wolfsberg, around 13.0 kilometres to the west; and St. Joseph's Church in Bernsdorf, around 23.1 kilometres to the south.

The district's cultural heritage sites include Altdöbern Palace with its large park and the reconstructed Raddusch Slavic Fort, an open-air archaeological museum connected with Slavic history.

At the palace and fortress complex in Senftenberg, visitors can take an extensive guided tour, visit a history museum and enter an underground show mine.

The open-air museum in Lehde documents Sorbian-Wendish and German rural life in the Spreewald during the 19th and early 20th centuries through four historic farm complexes.

The Lübbenau Spreewald Museum presents the former Spreewald railway with an original locomotive as well as a passenger carriage and luggage van from 1897. It is complemented by a reconstructed street scene from around 1900.
