Traces of History and Culture
Parts of the Via Claudia Augusta, which connected Augsburg with Verona, can still be seen in Saulgrub today. A pilgrimage route also begins in the village: the Benedikt Pilgrimage Route in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park starts at St. Francis Church. Built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1858, it was consecrated by Archbishop Gregor von Scherr on 27 August 1860. Saulgrub thus brings together historical traces and a specific starting point for a pilgrimage.
The Kammerl railway hydroelectric power station was built in Art Nouveau style between 1897 and 1899, at the same time as the Murnau–Oberammergau railway line. Another cultural destination is the Fatima Chapel: this small votive chapel stands on a ridge in Saulgrub and offers views across the northern Ammertal. It was consecrated on 12 September 1954.
