Nature Between Blossoms and Calcareous Tufa

Near Rohrbach, in the municipality of Ettenstatt, the stream bed rises above its surroundings to form a distinctive calcareous tufa ridge: the Stone Channel. The formation is about 60 meters long and up to 1.5 meters wide. The forest of blossoms and the calcareous tufa ridge offer two distinct natural features: one is defined by its seasonal blossoms, the other by its unusual geological form.

The Spring Snowflake Forest Circular Trail connects the Stone Channel near Rohrbach with the spring snowflake forest near Ettenstatt. The flowering season from March to early April gives the forest a clear seasonal focus, while the Stone Channel offers a distinct geological point of interest.

Church Fairs and a Summer Activity

Local traditions are also spread across a longer period: over the course of about half a year, church fairs are held in the municipalities of Ettenstatt and their associated districts. The stick-bread baking event at the Steinschütt viewpoint between Kaltenbuch and Geyern combines brass-band music, bratwurst, beer, and stick bread for children on four days in summer. Culture and Landscape in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen District

The Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district provides its own regional setting for nature and culture. Its southern part lies within Altmühltal Nature Park. The Roman Museum in Weißenburg displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Center. Above Weißenburg, the old Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg stands on the southern Franconian Jura’s highest hilltop, at 630 meters. It is an impressive monument to Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Weather permitting, guided tours are offered there from May to October; check the date before your visit. Weißenburg’s “Via Biriciana” hiking trail follows old Roman roads to the Limes. Another regional hiking route is the 200-kilometer Altmühltal Panorama Trail, which follows the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through Altmühltal Nature Park. For cyclists, the Jura E-Bike Tour, the Anlautertal Cycle Path, and the Limes Cycle Path are recommended in the wider region. Altmühlsee lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing, and surfing. The approximately 120-hectare Bird Island offers ornithological tours run by the Bavarian Association for the Protection of Birds.
