Discover Petting: Circular walks and historical traces
Accommodation in Petting
Petting can be explored through routes and destinations with a variety of character: circular walks lead through the western municipal area of Schnoat and the eastern Lodergäu. One route starts in Petting and leads to Schönramer Filz; an archaeological find between the parish church and Mühlfeld Chapel recalls the region’s early settlement. Kühnhausen lido is also one of the municipality’s excursion options. This lets you include nature, activity and local history in your holiday plans.
Circular walks through Schnoat and Lodergäu
The Schnoater circular walk, signposted as P3, is about 14.5 kilometres long. It leads through the western municipal area of Schnoat via Seeschneider, Streulach, Neuputzham, Putzham, Moosreuth, Wurzenberg, Ramstetten, Buschachen, Gabenstadt, Helming, Stubern, Filzschuster, Teichting, Schweighausen, Stötten and Seeberg, before returning to Petting. The sequence of places traces the route through this part of the municipality; the stated length is an approximate guide.
The Lodergäuer circular walk runs through the eastern part of the municipality of Petting, the Lodergäu. From Petting, it leads via Kühnhausen, Hennhart, Reichersdorf, Brandhofen, Kirchhof, Sondershausen and Zenzl to Mühlberg and back. Both circular walks return to Petting, but showcase different parts of the municipality. The Schnoater circular walk has an approximate total length; for the Lodergäuer, the focus is on the named sequence of places through the Lodergäu. Waymarking may change. Check local conditions before setting out.
Local history along the way
One route leads from Petting town hall via the parish church of St John the Baptist to Mühlfeld Chapel. During construction work in the area along this route, a significant Bavarian cemetery was uncovered. It provides insight into the region’s early settlement and adds a historical perspective to the route between the two named churches.
The route to the remains of the historic Vierschanze also starts at Petting town hall. The bridge along this route is on private property; the return journey follows the same route. Check local conditions before setting out, and do not plan to return via a different route.
Lake Waging and Schönramer Filz
Kühnhausen lido is located on the southern shore of Lake Waging, in the municipality of Petting. Its features include a gently sloping shore, a designated non-swimmer area, spacious sunbathing lawns and a restaurant. Check the operator’s latest information before visiting to ensure your plans take local conditions into account.
One route leads from Petting to Schönramer Filz. There, the nature trail features information boards about the bog and peat cutting. Schönramer Filz is one of the largest raised bogs in southeastern Bavaria. Peat was extracted there on a large scale until 1998; today, the area is protected, and the development of its bog and heathland areas has been left to nature once more. The nature trail’s information and the history of peat extraction give a visit a different focus from a walk through the municipal areas.
