Grassau combines swimming at Reifinger See with insights into the moorland landscape and the history of brine. Other highlights include the Sawallisch Estate and the Achentalbus 9505, which serves the Grassau Kirchplatz stop. This lets you plan your holiday around a range of interests: water and play, nature and exhibitions, or music and culture.

Time by the water at Reifinger See

Reifinger See is a bathing lake with 20,000 square metres of water. Its facilities include sunbathing lawns and a jetty, as well as a non-swimmer area and a bathing area for toddlers. There is also a “mud bridge” for toddlers; a playground, a beach volleyball court and a small raft add to the activities on offer at the lake. The different areas make the lake a practical destination for a day of swimming and other activities.

Accessibility information can also be important when planning your visit: the lake has a changing room accessible to wheelchair users, as well as a wheelchair available for use on site, kept in a cabin secured with a Euro lock. A ramp by the shore makes it easier to enter the water. The accessible toilet can be opened with a Euro key. If these facilities are essential to your visit, please confirm their accessibility before you travel.

Moorland and the Salt & Moor Museum

The Salt & Moor Museum combines two themes: information panels, models, films and simulations illustrate how the historic brine pumping station worked. A moorland exhibition complements the displays with original exhibits, dioramas and interactive elements. The Kendlmühlfilzen, one of southern Germany’s largest raised bogs, lies directly next to the Salt & Moor Museum Klaushäusl.

The Moor Experience Trail starts right by the Salt & Moor Museum, between Grassau and Rottau, and is partly accessible. The trail is being redesigned, so check the current route before your visit. The route for the version suitable for pushchairs has been changed. The forest trail is not suitable for pushchairs. Parking and a public toilet are available at the museum.

Different perspectives come together here: the museum covers the technology of the brine pumping station and the moor, while the neighbouring Kendlmühlfilzen shapes the landscape. You can decide what to focus on in your plans according to your interests: the exhibition, the moorland or the trail. Be sure to check the latest route information.

Music and culture at the Sawallisch Estate

The Sawallisch Estate is in Grassau’s Kucheln district and is managed by the Wolfgang Sawallisch Foundation. It is open to visitors as part of guided tours, and concerts are also regularly held in the villa. If you would like to include a cultural event in your holiday, check the calendar for dates. The tours and concerts offer a different kind of experience from a day at the lake or exploring the moorland.

Bus travel and holiday planning

The Achentalbus 9505 serves the Grassau Kirchplatz stop. Bicycles cannot always be carried, so check the current conditions before travelling. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider which activities you would like to focus on during your stay and which bus connections you plan to use.

Traunstein as the wider regional setting

The wider travel destination of Traunstein also offers a broader landscape setting, distinct from Grassau as a destination in its own right. Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger See are in the Traunstein district. The district is also home to more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching elevations of up to 2,000 metres in the Chiemgau Alps. These regional highlights complement Grassau’s local experiences with lakes and alpine landscapes elsewhere in the district.

Which of these highlights appeals to you can guide your search for a holiday apartment in Grassau: Reifinger See offers swimming and play, the museum and Moor Experience Trail offer nature and history, and the Sawallisch Estate offers guided tours and concerts.
