History and remembrance in Waakirchen

The Schaftlach Crucifix in Waakirchen probably dates from the Ottonian period. The 193-centimetre-tall figure is made of hollowed-out limewood; the wood used was probably felled around 970. Unveiled in 1905, the Lion Monument commemorates those who fell in the Peasants’ Battle. The crucifix and the monument thus offer two different ways of engaging with history: a religious work of art and a memorial to the fallen.

Since May 2007, the Eybel Chocolate Spring has provided information about chocolate. Miesbach offers a range of walking experiences for an active break. The Achtsamkeitsbergweg on Stadlberg starts above Kleinthal, is approximately 3 kilometres long and passes seven stations. These focus on mindful awareness, walking and breathing, gratitude, observing nature and a simple mindfulness exercise from yoga.

The circular walks also vary in duration and difficulty. The easy walk to the former Schloss Wallenburg starts at Miesbach station, is 4.7 kilometres long and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes; there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments. The family-friendly, easy circular walk Through the “Untere Wies” is 8.0 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The family-friendly Miesbach Stadlberg circuit also starts at Habererplatz, next to the town square. It is 8.1 kilometres long, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is of moderate difficulty. Although these two circular walks are almost the same length, they differ in difficulty and time required.
