Churches and History in Oberwarngau
St. John the Baptist Church stands on the Kirchbichl hill. Its present form was created around 1500 as a late Gothic tuff ashlar building. The portal and the star vault inside date from this period; three high altar figures from the first half of the 16th century have also been preserved. A particularly notable testimony is the large Lenten cloth in Oberwarngau. It measures 435 × 280 cm and is used in St. John the Baptist for its original liturgical purpose. The late 17th century is also associated with a large-scale Crucifixion scene.
The pilgrimage church of Allerheiligen also tells the story of the village. It stands on the old country road that once connected Oberwarngau with Tegernsee Abbey. Its function as a pilgrimage church has been documented since the end of the 17th century; between 1739 and 1754, the church acquired its final Baroque form. Every year on the fourth Sunday in October, the Warngau Leonhardi pilgrimage takes place. The programme includes a church service as well as the blessing of the teams of horses and riders. Another historical stop is the Nüchternbrunn pilgrimage chapel, which lies idyllically in the forest and originated around 1710 from a wooden hermitage.
Taubenberg, Cycling Tour and Winter Experiences
For a mountain hike up Taubenberg, the route begins in the centre of Oberwarngau. At the historic observation tower, the key is kept at the nearby Taubenberg mountain inn and issued against a deposit. This makes it possible to combine an excursion with a specific viewing destination without losing sight of the village’s historic character.
A bike tour of around half an hour in the municipality of Warngau starts at the Allerheiligen pilgrimage church and leads via Taubenberg and Hinterberg past the “Ludwiger” farm. Along the way, there are views of meadows and hills. For the colder months, the municipality of Warngau has a 7.5 km cross-country ski trail in Wall, starting at the sports facility, as well as a 5 km trail in Warngau, accessible from the sports field or Brandweg. Another experience is offered by sightseeing flights, which are available at Oberwarngau airfield with experienced pilots. The municipality’s bathing pond is also located on the outskirts of Osterwarngau.
Getting There and Finding Suitable Accommodation
For travel by public transport, the municipality of Warngau has its own BRB railway station on the Munich–Tegernsee–Lenggries route. Bus connections link Warngau with Miesbach, Wall, Holzkirchen, Bad Tölz and Tegernsee. The excavations on the so-called Kaiserbichl hill also give the village a distinctive historical depth; they show that Warngau’s roots reach back at least to the 6th century AD.
A holiday apartment in Oberwarngau is therefore a starting point for very different travel plans. You can combine cultural impressions with physical activity, explore the forest and the heights around Taubenberg or choose the offerings of the municipality of Warngau according to the season.
