The paper mill and monastic history in Homburg

The Homburg Paper Mill is a cultural and industrial monument unique in Bavaria. It was restored with public funding from 1994 to 1997. The museum preserves fully and authentically maintained production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, living quarters of the papermaking family and a demonstration workshop. The craft also has a contemporary connection: a fifth-generation hand papermaking workshop still produces fine handmade paper today. In this way, preserved workspaces and a continuing craft tradition come together in one place.

Triefenstein Monastery offers another historical perspective. Founded in 1102, it was an Augustinian monastery for canons regular for more than 700 years. This long history complements the industrial history of the paper mill with a different view of the area’s cultural past. Klostersee and Kallmuth: two landscapes

Klostersee in Trennfeld was created between 1972 and 1975 by gravel extraction. Its water surface covers about 76,000 square metres, its shoreline is about 1,700 metres long, and it reaches a depth of up to five metres. There is an important restriction to bear in mind when planning a visit to the lake: the section on the left, as seen from the bathing lawn, is used by the Trennfeld Fishing Association. Swimming and boats are prohibited there. Check the current local rules before your visit so you can identify the relevant part of the lake correctly.

In Homburg, Kallmuth adds a geological feature to the landscape. The limestone crag rises above the Bunter sandstone. Anyone interested in the landscape’s formation and character will find a clear contrast here with the artificially created waters of Klostersee: the lake was formed through gravel extraction, while Kallmuth is a distinctive geological formation. A Culture Trail with several stops

Culture Trail 2 was inaugurated in September 2012. It runs along the left bank of the Main from Lengfurt via the quarry, cement works, Kallmuth and Homburg, returning to its starting point at the Mainkai in Lengfurt. The stops link industrial and landscape-related themes with Homburg; Kallmuth is also part of the route described.
