Discover Thüngen: Garden, Old Town and Castle Complex
Accommodation in Thüngen
A Japanese garden, guided tours of the Old Town and a castle complex give Thüngen a varied character. Between garden details, historic sites and the Wern Valley Cycle Route, there are different ideas for your holiday days. Which of these shapes your stay may also influence your choice of a suitable base for your holiday.
Explore the Garden and Old Town
From May to September, Ruth and Horst Benkert show visitors their Japanese garden, which covers approximately 500 m². A pond, a stream with a waterfall and seating areas sit alongside Far Eastern decorations, bamboo, ornamental maples, and rock and stone features. Booking in advance is requested; please confirm the arrangements for your visit beforehand. This seasonal experience can then be included in your daily plans.
Anyone wishing to learn more about Thüngen can request a German-language guided tour of the Old Town for a group, by arrangement. Groups include, among others, families, clubs, businesses and class reunions. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and starts at the Ludwigslinde on Planplatz. The route through the town is also clearly described: it goes from Planplatz to St. George’s Church and through the Bangerts. It covers historic sites and former Jewish institutions. If you are planning a tour, ask the local contact about availability.
Thüngen’s castle complex is located in Bangerts and comprises the Burgschloss, the Spitalschloss and the Alte Stock. The complex is privately occupied. Its three parts give the historic townscape a distinctive focal point, but should not be confused with the stops on the Old Town tour.
Cycle Route, Group Activity and Regional Perspectives
The Wern Valley Cycle Route, also known as the Wern Cycle Route, runs directly through Thüngen. This adds a cycling route as another point of reference for planning your trip, alongside the sights in town. Include the cycle route in your itinerary if you would like to travel by bike.
Another activity is expressly aimed at groups: at Schlossgut Thüngen, groups of 20 or more can request a Duke of Franconia whisky and beer tasting with a three-course meal in the castle cellar. A date must be requested and availability confirmed directly. This makes the activity different from the Old Town tours: both require an arrangement, while the tasting also has a minimum group size.
In the wider travel destination of Main-Spessart, vineyards, water and forests shape the landscape. One regional hiking option is the Main River Trail, which is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres run through the district of Main-Spessart, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. The Spessart Trails bear the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal. These details provide a broader framework for trip planning, while the Wern Valley Cycle Route runs directly through Thüngen.
Those interested in culture will also find a variety of places to explore in the wider travel destination of Main-Spessart. Aschfeld is home to a historic fortified church dating from the 15th century; parts of its defensive complex are used as museum rooms. There, the “Die gute alte Zeit zum Anfassen” collection displays old defensive weapons as well as rural life and work. Karlstadt’s Old Town preserves buildings and structures that have survived for more than seven centuries; the town was founded around 1200. These examples represent regional destinations in their own right and should not be confused with the sights in Thüngen.
Find a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Plans
When choosing a holiday apartment in Thüngen, local experiences can be a starting point: the seasonal garden, the Old Town tour available by arrangement, or the cycle route that passes through town. The group activity at Schlossgut requires a separate enquiry. Choose your holiday apartment according to the experience you would like to shape your stay.
