Karlstadt’s old town, surrounded by walls, towers and gates, was founded around 1200. Its buildings and urban structures have been preserved for more than seven centuries. If you are interested in historic townscapes, this is a great place to start exploring: alongside the old town, you can also learn about the town’s history at the museum.

Old Town and Town History

After five years of extensive renovation, the Karlstadt Museum reopened in May 2022 with its ZeitBRÜCHE and StadtGESCHICHTE departments. The StadtGESCHICHTE department covers, among other things, the Franks’ expansion into the Main region during the Carolingian period and the history of settlement in prehistoric times. Specially designed exhibition rooms are dedicated to these subjects. This means you can explore history in different ways in the old town and at the museum: outside, through the preserved buildings and urban structures; inside, through the thematically designed rooms.

A special feature of the museum is its four half-timbered rooms, which have remained almost unchanged for more than 500 years. Their wall paintings convey the spirit of the 16th century. You can not only gain an overview of settlement history dating back to the distant past, but also see how historic rooms and their painted decoration are presented as evidence of a particular era. St. Andreas Parish Church is also one of Karlstadt’s sights.

In Karlstadt, you can explore the historic old town and one of its districts on your own with self-guided tours. This format is especially suitable for spontaneous visits and solo travellers: you can take a tour without joining a group and choose between the old town and the districts. On the left bank of the Main, across from the town and nearby, Karlsburg Castle Ruins stand on a rocky spur. They add another historic site that brings Karlstadt’s location on the Main into view.

A hike from Karlstadt to terroir f Karlstadt-Stetten is about 5 km long. The destination lies among the sun-drenched steep slopes of the “Stettener Stein” vineyard. From a viewing platform, you can enjoy views across the Franconian Wine Country and the Main. This outing combines a specific route with a viewpoint among the vineyards; its approximate distance will help you factor it into your day’s plans.

Wine and Franconian Specialities

Karlstadt’s local character is also reflected in its Heckenwirtschaften, temporary wine taverns that are often open for only a few weeks a year. If one is open during your trip, you can sample wine, homemade sausage, Gerupfter cheese spread and Kühkäs'. Their limited opening period sets them apart from sights that are open year-round: plan this part of your stay as a seasonal option, rather than something available on every trip.

The “Stadtwein” is also part of town life: Karlstadt will select it for the 17th time in 2027. The chosen wine is served at municipal events, concerts and receptions hosted by the town. The old town and museum, trails along the Main and Franconian wine culture offer different ways to discover Karlstadt according to your interests. A holiday apartment in Karlstadt can serve as accommodation for a stay that combines historic sights with outdoor activities.
