Heigenbrücken offers a range of ways to experience nature, culture and outdoor activities: an educational discovery trail explores quotations and images, a cultural circular trail passes a historic site, and circular and themed trails add to the selection. There is also a distinctive sandstone formation, natural areas and seasonal activities. You can decide which experiences you want to shape your trip and whether Heigenbrücken suits your plans as a holiday destination.

Trails with different themes

The free GlücksWEG discovery trail features 28 selected quotations on display boards. Custom-created artwork and photographs illustrate the texts. The trail was created in 2013 by Martin-Niels Däfler together with the youth group “Neue Talente”. The combination of words and images gives the trail its own cultural focus. For families planning days out together, it can offer a different kind of inspiration for exploring than a trail focused mainly on physical activity or local history.

The “Die Heigenbrückener Formation” cultural circular trail starts opposite the town hall and passes Bächlesgrund. Pentecost gatherings of glassmakers were held there until the first quarter of the 16th century. This connects the area’s history to a specific place. If you are interested in the town’s past, you can include this trail in your day’s plans as a cultural complement to the GlücksWEG display boards.

Another option is the KommunikationsWALD: this 4.1-kilometre circular trail starts right by Heigenbrücken station. Its stated length helps you estimate the distance when planning, without specifying a walking time or difficulty level. The quality-certified “Spessartweg 2” trail also adds a themed route to the network around Heigenbrücken. When choosing trails, you can therefore distinguish between a circular route with a stated length and a designated themed trail.

Sandstone and nature around the town

Heigenbrücken sandstone is a geological section of the Lower Buntsandstein, now referred to as the Calvörde Formation. Stone from this sequence has been quarried in Heigenbrücken since the mid-19th century. The name refers to its geological classification; quarrying is part of the town’s history. The sandstone formation thus adds a landscape and geological perspective to the cultural themes.

The “Spessartwiesen” nature reserve starts right next to the Heigenbrücken natural swimming pool. In the surrounding area, large parts of the Lohrbach valley around Heigenbrücken, as well as areas along its side valleys, are also part of this nature reserve. When choosing a place to stay, this offers a nature-focused option found both at a specific named location and across a wider landscape.

Activities and getting there

The Spessart climbing forest has a zipline course (Flying Fox) more than 600 metres long. In Heigenbrücken, skiing, snowboarding and sledding are available at Winterloch or Engländer. These activities differ considerably from the cultural trail themes, so when planning your trip you can first decide whether you would rather focus on trails and local history or on outdoor activities.

For travel, Heigenbrücken has a RegionalExpress stop on the Frankfurt–Würzburg railway line. There are also two free e-bike charging stations: one at the “Zur frischen Quelle” inn in the town centre, and one near the kiosk or toilets at the wildlife park.

Heinrichsthal Heinrichsthal is also part of the local area of Heigenbrücken. More places to discover: Waldaschaff Waldaschaff, Neustadt Am Main Neustadt Am Main, Thüngen Thüngen, Neuhütten Neuhütten, Hafenlohr Hafenlohr, Gemünden am Main Gemünden am Main and Stockstadt Am Main Stockstadt Am Main.
