Hiking trails for different kinds of day
The easy, family-friendly Rhön Circular Trail 9 – Butterfly Nature Trail is 4.4 km long and suitable for pushchairs. Along the way, information boards explain the lifestyles of native butterfly species. This makes the loop a chance to combine exercise with a topic that children can discover along the way, too. If you prefer a shorter route with information along the trail, this circular walk offers an alternative to the longer hikes.
The moderately challenging Rhön Circular Trail 1 – Five Districts is 15.9 km long and connects all five districts of the market municipality of Oberelsbach. Its length and difficulty rating make it an option for a longer day of hiking. The two Rhön circular trails therefore differ both in distance and in their stated level of difficulty. Choose your holiday apartment with an eye to whether you mainly want to plan a shorter outing or a longer loop during your stay.
Another hiking option is the certified Premium Extra Tour Hochrhöntour. It is around 15 km long and passes through meadows and forests via the Thüringer Hütte, the Basaltsee and the Schwabenhimmel. These named stops and landscapes give the tour its own character. The approximate distance is deliberately a guide: the Hochrhöntour is not the same as the 15.9 km circular trail.
Experience the Rhön: nature and orientation
The Rhön Cycle Route also offers a wider perspective on the region: the 180 km route runs from Bad Salzungen in Thuringia to Hammelburg in Bavaria and crosses Oberelsbach roughly halfway along. This provides a long-distance route alongside the circular trails described above, with a course that extends far beyond the village.
The market municipality of Oberelsbach includes five nature reserves. Another special feature is its protection of the night: all street lighting in Oberelsbach is designed with this in mind. The International Dark Sky Reserve Rhön was recognised in 2014. These aspects make nature a focus not only during the day; how the nighttime environment is treated is also part of the area's character.
At the Haus der Langen Rhön Biosphere Centre, a permanent exhibition provides information about the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. There is also a quiz trail for children: Elsbeth the Rhön sheep asks questions and encourages them to look closely. The exhibition and quiz trail offer different ways to explore the Rhön's themes, so families can plan a visit around their interests.
Traditions and regional insights
Every two years, the market municipality of Oberelsbach hosts the Rhöner Masked Carnival. Spanmänner, Fosenöchter and other participants parade through the streets in traditional costumes and historic wooden masks; the public is welcome to attend. If your trip coincides with the festival, you can experience a distinctive local tradition. As it takes place every two years, it is not an annual event.
Visitors can watch woodcarvers at work in Oberelsbach as part of the “Schnitz I Stand I Ort I Rhön” initiative. This craft offers a different cultural focus from the masked carnival: here, the emphasis is on watching wooden objects take shape. The Pax-Bräu brewery, founded in 2007, is another part of the local character; it brews beer and speciality beers in Oberelsbach.
For activities that appeal to different interests, there is also the mini-golf course on the edge of town, on Gangolfsstraße. It has a kiosk and is close to the Oberelsbach playground, the motorhome site and the Els stream. In Unterelsbach, certified orchard educator Carmen Schiefhauer offers age-appropriate guided orchard tours, activities, excursions and projects throughout the year. These are aimed, among others, at families, school classes, children's and youth groups, clubs and adults.
