Half-Timbered Houses and a Town Walk

The historic townscape is characterised by half-timbered houses with richly carved corner beams. It also features a well-preserved town wall with five defensive towers and narrow lanes. Rural Life at the Open-Air Museum

The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen comprises around 30 historic buildings across a twelve-hectare museum site. The permanent exhibition „Draft Animals“ explores the role of horses and cattle as draft animals in rural everyday and working life. The exhibition is housed in the large livestock barn from Herbstadt at the Mühlfeld farmstead, making work with these animals a tangible focus of a museum visit.

At the museum, visitors can touch things, try them out and take part themselves. This makes the visit different from an exhibition where you only look: here, hands-on activities are also part of the experience. For families who enjoy discovering things together on an outing, this opportunity to participate is an added attraction alongside the historic buildings and the exhibition about draft animals.

Travelling on the Rhön-Zügle

During the season from May to October, the Rhön-Zügle runs on selected Sundays between the railway stations in Fladungen and Mellrichstadt. The service uses historic carriages, known as Donnerbüchsen, as well as steam and diesel locomotives. If you would like to include this train journey in your trip, the seasonal service on selected Sundays is an important consideration when planning. The „Rathaus/Fladungen“ bus stop is directly in front of the Rhön Museum.

Circular Trails and Customised Guided Tours

The circular hiking trails in Fladungen were selected and signposted by the Rhön Nature Park. The easy Circular Trail 1, „Around Wurmberg“, is 4.7 kilometres long. It follows farm and forest tracks around Wurmberg and offers views of Fladungen and the Hochrhön ridge. The Old Town Circular Trail, also described as easy, is longer at 5.7 kilometres and stays within the historic town centre. This gives you the choice between a walk through the old town and a route along farm and forest tracks with scenic views.
