Hiking Around Gerolsbach

The Eulenthal hiking trail starts at Rathausplatz in Gerolsbach. It follows Pfaffenhofener Straße towards Singenbach and passes the adventure playground. The trail continues along a cycle path to Klenau; numerous benches along the way invite you to take a break. Crossing the Gerolsbach offers a view across the valley. The route combines specific waypoints with a scenic outlook: those who like to follow marked stops can keep an eye out for the playground and rest benches, while the view from the river crossing offers a different highlight.

The Ähren Route – Short Version offers a different selection of waypoints. It passes a wayside cross, a wayside chapel image beneath a chestnut tree, and a sports ground with a playground. A cemetery with a chapel and memorial cross is also on the route. One route option leads through a wooded area to Bockhof; alternatively, the hike can be extended by one and a half kilometres towards Oberwengen and Gröbern. This lets you choose between the route’s waypoints, the woodland option and a specified additional distance.

Church, Marian Column and Castle Site

The history of the parish church also offers insight into the local past. It was partly Romanesque and predominantly Early Baroque. Following the village fire of 2 August 1846, it was rebuilt, with only a few remnants preserved. Beside the parish church, on the grounds of the former cemetery, stands a Marian column featuring a limestone statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1875. The church’s history and the column highlight different aspects of the past: one tells of rebuilding after the fire, the other is a surviving artwork with a precisely dated origin.

The former Gerolseck Castle stood on the steep slope beyond the Gerolsbach, in Aichmühler Wald. No stones from the castle remain at the site today. A collapsed castle moat and the names “Schloßberg” and “Schloßgarten” are reminders of the past. Unlike the Marian column, the castle site points to its history chiefly through the shape of the terrain and its names.
