In Ruderting, paths through the countryside and small discoveries along the way are part of the village’s character. Four chapel cycling and walking routes, the GeHschichtenweg along the Ilz, the landscape pond and historic wayside crosses offer different starting points for days spent on holiday. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would prefer to explore mainly on foot or by bike, linger by the pond or include regional cultural attractions.

Chapel routes and paths along the Ilz

The four chapel cycling and walking routes lead residents and visitors from chapel to chapel through the countryside of the municipalities of Ruderting and Tiefenbach. They can be cycled individually, combined with one another or walked.

The Ruderting GeHschichtenweg runs along the banks of the Ilz, parallel to the southernmost Goldsteig stage to Passau. The focus here is therefore on the river and its connection to a longer hiking route. If you are interested in this trail, you can compare it with the chapel routes as a different way to spend time outdoors: on the one hand, there are paths leading from chapel to chapel; on the other, the route along the banks of the Ilz. The Ruderting art trail is suitable for pushchairs, providing a practical point of reference if this feature matters when choosing a route.

The landscape pond and local discoveries

The landscape pond in Ruderting has a green space with numerous trees, bushes and shrubs, inviting visitors to take a walk and linger. A natural Kneipp pool and an adventure playground for children are also nearby. This area brings together several different interests: a walk in the greenery, a place to linger and two other named attractions. Families may find it particularly helpful that the playground is specifically intended for children; whether it fits your plans for the day is up to you and your interests.

Wayside and field crosses also give Ruderting a tangible cultural theme. There are around 20 in the municipality; most were restored during land consolidation in the early 1990s. The largest and best-known cross in Ruderting has stood in the village centre since 1935. The approximate number describes how many there are, while the restoration of most of the crosses in the early 1990s marks a chapter in their history. If you enjoy noticing details like these during your stay, they offer a specific reason to look beyond the paths themselves.

More ideas in the Passau travel region

The Passau travel region has other themes to inspire your trip planning. In Tittling, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. Visitors can see more than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890, across 20 hectares. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments; it is also home to Germany’s oldest elementary school, dating from 1666. This offers a different focus from the wayside crosses in Ruderting: here, you can explore the region’s architectural heritage in an extensive museum complex.

The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal baths. Well-known thermal springs are located in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. If you are also considering cycling during your trip, you can learn about the Danube Cycle Path: it runs through the Passau region and received a four-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Association. As certifications can change, check the current status of the award if needed. For those interested in culture, Ortenburg Castle Culture offers music events, cabaret, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, lectures and guided tours from April to December. Check event dates seasonally.

You can choose where to stay based on the holiday themes you have in mind: Ruderting’s chapel trails, the banks of the Ilz and the pond are complemented by other cultural and nature-related attractions in the Passau travel region.
