Button History and Audio Guides
Since 1998, the German Button Museum has been housed in Bärnau’s former communal brewery. It displays buttons from four centuries and made from 26 different materials. Machines and tools also illustrate earlier methods of button-making. The collection therefore offers a look at both the buttons themselves and the technology used to make them.

Old Town and Steinberg
A walk through Bärnau’s Old Town introduces you to the history and present-day life of the oldest town in the Stiftland region. Tours include open guided tours and bookings for groups. If you would like to join a tour, check the current schedule.
Nearby, on Steinberg, stands Tilly’s Redoubt, a surviving archaeological monument from the Thirty Years’ War. The fortification was built as a defensive structure in 1621 and is located around 300 metres from the Borderland Tower. The pilgrimage route also crosses Steinberg, following an avenue of lime, elm and maple trees that is more than 200 years old. Stations of the Cross are part of the route; the avenue is designated a natural monument.
Nature and Active Days
The Borderland Nature Trail runs alongside the moor pond and is suitable for hiking. The moor pond is freely accessible at all times; rowing and swimming are possible. There is no lifeguard on site. Hiking the trail and spending time by the water offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Silberhütte lies at an elevation of about 850 metres above sea level in the municipality of Bärnau. It is a year-round starting point for competitive and recreational sports. There is also a well-signposted network of cycle paths around Bärnau, with routes for both leisure cyclists and competitive riders.
When snow conditions are good, Silberhütte offers a network of more than 50 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. The individual trails are 2 to 18 kilometres long and can be used for classic or skating-style skiing. When planning, it is important to distinguish between the year-round sports centre and cross-country skiing, which depends on snow: if you plan to use the trails, check the snow conditions before your visit.
Culture and Food in Tirschenreuth
In Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier combines the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum with six other specialist exhibitions in a former monastery. There, you can explore nearly 1,000 years of fishing and fish farming history and see native fish in four large aquariums. In Fischhof Park in Tirschenreuth, the historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court, are located in the centre. The Tirschenreuth district is known above all for Zoigl, the cult beer of the Upper Palatinate Forest. The district is also known for carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.”
