Rennertshofen can be explored on two scales: the market town reveals its history along Marktstraße and on a signposted walking tour, while the landscape and other destinations in the municipality offer different points of interest. This lets you tailor your days away to what interests you most—historic streetscapes, a bike ride with a regional focus, or nature and water.

History along Marktstraße and in the market town

Buildings from several centuries stand side by side along Marktstraße: the rectory dates from 1680, the Bürgerhäuser (town houses) from the 16th to 18th centuries, and the schoolhouse from the 17th century. These different periods offer tangible points of reference for the town’s history, without requiring you to focus on any one building. Since April 2010, a signposted “Historic Walking Tour” has also led through the market town of Rennertshofen. It offers a dedicated way to explore the town and its traces of the past. If you enjoy discovering culture on the move, this tour can add another perspective on the market town.

Landscape and orientation near Mauern

The Wellheim dry valley follows a series of broad loops from Rennertshofen via Hütting to Dollnstein. Its described route alone makes clear that this landscape extends beyond the market town. In the district of Mauern is the “Mauerner Höhlen” information centre. Its information panels cover the Mauerner Höhlen caves, the ancient Danube valley, Mauern, the adjacent nature reserve and the natural monument “Steinerner Mann.” The Altmühl Cycle Path runs right past the information centre. Cyclists can connect the topics covered there with a specific point on their route; those more interested in landscape and nature will find several perspectives on the surrounding area on the panels.

More topics across the municipality

Water and wildlife are also part of the picture across the municipality. The Bertoldsheim Danube barrage has long been used for sailing. The Bertoldsheim reservoir is also of European importance as a wintering site for waterbirds. Both facts relate to the municipality, not just the market town. This means different connections with nature and water can be found there: its use as a sailing area and the reservoir’s importance to wintering waterbirds. A pilgrimage that is still held today also originated in Mauern: after the plague years of 1632 and 1649, the people of Burgheim vowed to make an annual pilgrimage to Mauern. It links local history with a tradition that continues to this day.

Which location suits your days away

These different topics can help guide your search for a holiday apartment in Rennertshofen. If you want to focus primarily on historic streetscapes and a walking tour, the market town’s history offers a clear focus. For cycling and landscape interests, the route of the Wellheim dry valley and the information centre on the Altmühl Cycle Path offer other points of interest. Destinations across the municipality broaden the picture to include water, birdlife and tradition. When choosing the focus for your trip, first consider which of these topics you would like to explore further.
